  • BYD Debuts Han L and Tang L Models to Target China’s Premium NEV Market

Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled two new flagship models, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, aiming to expand its presence in China’s premium new energy vehicle (NEV) market. The vehicles, part of BYD’s Dynasty series, cater to the RMB 300,000 ($40,930) price range and mark a significant move toward upscale offerings.

The Tang, first introduced in 2014 and a cornerstone in BYD’s mid-to-high-end market segment, has been revamped alongside the Han, originally launched in 2020 as the brand’s first premium sedan. These new models feature upgraded designs and enhanced performance, while current Han and Tang family models, priced between RMB 165,800 and RMB 269,800, will remain on sale. Pricing details for the Han L and Tang L are expected to be announced at a March event.

Both the Han L and Tang L adopt a refreshed “Loong Face” design language, replacing the earlier “Dragon Face” aesthetic. The redesign reflects a cultural shift in distinguishing the mythical Chinese dragon from its Western counterpart.

The Han L sedan, measuring 5,050 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,970 mm, is larger than its predecessor and comes in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants. The BEV’s single-motor version delivers a peak power of 500 kW, while the dual-motor variant offers 230 kW and 580 kW, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds.

The Tang L SUV, measuring 5,040 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm, features a spacious three-row seating layout. Like the Han L, it is available in BEV and PHEV variants, sharing similar powertrain configurations. Both models highlight BYD’s advancements in motor technology, chassis engineering, and intelligent driving systems, according to Lu Tian, head of sales for BYD’s Dynasty lineup.
